It is a magnificent land of picturesque valleys and lofty hills formed by glaciers and converted into a beautiful historic cemetery. A diversified forest of trees forms an arboretum shading thousands of granite, marble, and bronze monuments. The graveyard is a true museum of funerary statues and monuments spanning more than a century and a half.

About twelve thousand (12,000) to fourteen thousand (14,000) years ago, Mount Hope was comprised of ice one to two miles high. As the glacier shrank, snaps emerged in the ice, and those gaps became rivers of water and sand. When the miles-high ice sheets finally melted, these river beds were left as ridges formed from all the rock and rubble that had been deposited by the flowing river. In geological terms, these ridges are named eskers. One such esker snakes its way through much of Mount Hope Cemetery.

The White Lady’s Castle – Rochester NY

ny this weekend things to do in rochester

The White Lady’s Castle is a hall that serves up dinner with ghost stories for hearty locals. The real building ruins found in Durand-Eastman Park were once the part of a hotel dining lounge that assisted swimmers in the nearby Lake Ontario. Now the place is little more than sets of rounded steps leading up to a high stone wall. The top of the great stone wall serves as a sort of support. The overall response is that of an old European castle sunk into ruin, so it is no surprise that a pervasive local legend has evolved around the site. It is situated near a forest in Rochester, New York, The United States of America.

A visitor to White Lady’s Castle said, “There are a lot of legends and tales, all are different, all are interesting. Don’t know which are true and which are false. I wish things like that, though. Haven’t seen the White Lady, but wishing I do someday.”
